As we age, we begin to develop more wrinkles and creases around the eyes, forehead and mouth. This is often the result of a breakdown in the collagen and elastin fibers beneath the facial surface. Squinting, frowning, smiling and smoking may also contribute to the appearance of these lines. Botox® has become one of the most popular and effective treatments to reduce these lines, prevent new ones and give you a more youthful appearance. It is a neurotoxin that is injected in small amounts just beneath the skin to weaken the underlying muscles of facial expression. These muscles are responsible for deeper wrinkles of the forehead, between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) and around the eyes (“Crows Feet”). This procedure is an in office procedure that will take a few minutes and patients can immediately return to normal activities. Patients typically see the benefits from the treatment within 1-4 days following their injection, and the effects typically last 3-4 months. Dr. Zwick is a member of the physician provider network, authorized to administer BOTOX injections.

Microdermabrasion is a safe, gentle and effective treatment to remove age spots and fine lines around the eyes, lips and neck. It is also used to treat patients with acne, acne scarring, stretch marks, and sun damage. Microdermabrasion is a progressive, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that propels natural mineral crystals onto the surface of the skin for gentle epidermal abrasion that reveals newer, healthier, younger skin. Most treatments take between 10 and 30 minutes while treatments for stretch marks usually require more time. Regardless of your skin color or type, microdermabrasion treatments can help you regain a more youthful appearance.

Terry will work with you to design a skin care regime tailored to your specific needs which will include microdermabrasion .
Facial peels are another effective way to reduce fine facial lines, blemishes, sun damage, and uneven pigmentation. By using a chemical solution, such as fruit acid, peels remove the outer layer of skin resulting in new skin cell and collagen production. This exfoliation process reveals the underlying firmer skin to give you a healthy, glowing more youthful complexion.

Permanent make-up, also referred to as micropigmentation, is used to enhance sparse or uneven eyebrows by using fine lines to simulate real hair; accentuate your eyes by applying pigmentation to your lash lines; camouflage blemishes and scars; and recreate a natural nipple-areola after breast reconstruction. An allergy test is given prior to the procedure to ensure patients do not have adverse reactions to the pigmentation. A local anesthesia is often used to reduce discomfort. Procedure times vary. Most upper and lower lash line procedures take 30 to 40 minutes. Colors are mixed to match your natural skin tone and hair color.
Over time the thin layer of skin that surrounds our eyes may sag causing us to look more tired and older than we may feel. To recapture a refreshed, youthful appearance, an eyelid lift, also known as a blepharoplasty, may be performed to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids, lift sagging eyelids, or address fatty pockets and excess skin under the eyes. A blepharoplasty may be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures to achieve rejuvenation of the periocular region.
Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure conducted in our private surgical suite adjacent to the Annapolis office. Typically, the procedure is done with a local anesthetic. An incision is made in the natural upper eyelid crease to remove excess skin and fat. If the eyelid is drooping due to muscle laxity, the muscle can be tightened to raise the eyelid.
For patients who have excess fat in their lower eyelids, a procedure called lower eyelid blepharoplasty either removes or redistributes the fat through an incision made in the inner surface of the lower eyelid. If excess skin needs to be removed from the lower eyelid, an incision is made below the lashes. Bruising is often minimal and a patient may expect to return to work in five to seven days. As each person’s healing time is different, it may take a couple of weeks to realize the final results as swelling from surgery decreases.
Frequently, the problem is not with the upper eyelids, but with the eyebrows. As the face ages, the brows tend to droop causing heaviness to the upper eyelid area. If the problem lies in the brow, a brow lift may be the suggested procedure. There are various approaches to raising the brows, including a direct brow lift, a transblepharoplasty brow lift or an endoscopic brow lift. With the endoscopic brow lift, small incisions are made behind the hairline and the tissues of the scalp and forehead are lifted. The tissues of the brow are re-suspended upwards, resulting in rejuvenation of the upper eyelids, a decrease in crow's feet formation and a more awake, refreshed appearance. Further benefits of the endoscopic brow lift include dramatic reduction in forehead wrinkles due to weakening and relaxation of the muscles of the forehead. Since this technology requires only a few incisions behind the hairline to achieve the desired results, there is a shorter recovery time than major reconstructive surgery and no visible scars.
Restylane® is clear gel containing hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in our skin. As we age, this acid’s distribution and function changes resulting in facial lines and a decreased volume in the fullness of the face. Restylane® may be injected into different areas of the face to increase volume, soften lines and give you a more youthful appearance. Some of the common areas that are treated include lips, marionette lines at the ends of the mouth, smoker’s lines around the mouth, acne scarring, and nasolabial folds, which are the lines from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth.
Juvéderm is another injectable filler containing a non-animal, hyaluronic acid. It is used to help soften facial lines and deep folds (listed above under Restylane) that are a result of the natural aging process. Juvéderm created by the makers of Botox®, is a safe, effective, non-surgical treatment to help regain the natural volume of youthful skin. During your consultation, Dr. Zwick will discuss which filler is best suited for your skin, age and desired look.
We carry a variety of high-end, dermatologist-approved skin care products for different skin types. These products may be used for a daily skin care regimen or your doctor may recommend a pre and post-surgical skin care regimen to help with the natural healing process. During your consultation for either general skin care or surgery, we will discuss the best treatment plan for you.
As the lower eyelid and cheek areas age, fat pockets and wrinkles often develop and the tissues of the mid-face drop. This creates a groove below the eyelid called the "tear trough." This contour change is what causes shadow lines, especially in overhead lighting. By using an innovative technique that repositions orbital fat rather than removing fat, the tissue deficiency is filled in with your own tissues. Sometimes the entire midface area is repositioned upwards to further fill tissue deficiency. This combination truly rejuvenates the entire complex of tissue and gives you a more youthful, refreshed appearance.
