What is Monovision?
Monovision is blended vision, where the dominant eye is focused for distance vision and the non-dominant eye is focused for near to intermediate vision. Usually around our early 40s, we begin to notice a change in our near vision. This progressive condition is known as Presbyopia. To account for this change, some patients choose monovision, which can be achieved using contact lenses, intraocular lenses or it can be created during refractive surgery, such as LASIK, when the surgeon leaves one eye slightly nearsighted. Usually before performing refractive surgery, patients interested in monovision will undergo a test trial using a contact lens to simulate monovision and ensure they are able to adapt to the blended vision. It usually takes a brief period of time for monovision patients, regardless if they choose contact lenses or surgery, to adapt to this new form of vision.
Since monovision is a blend of near vision and distance vision, your distance vision may not be as sharp and certain tasks such as reading fine print or reading for extended periods of time may be difficult. If you are a golfer, tennis player or drive a lot at night, monovision may not be right for you. During your consultation, our doctors will thoroughly discuss your lifestyle, visual needs and visual capabilities to design vision that is right for you.
