NearVision CK

NearVision CK

Have you noticed that you need to hold that menu further away?

Or you can’t seem to find a pair of reading glasses just when you need them?

The reality is that as we get older, our near vision becomes blurred. It’s a normal part of the aging process that usually starts in the early 40s. The good news is that we now have an alternative called CK that reduces or eliminates the need for reading glasses.

This safe, simple procedure takes less than five minutes to perform and uses radio waves to correct your near vision. Our patients are thrilled that they no longer need reading glasses to read a menu or dial their cell phones.

What is CK?

CK or conductive keratoplasty is one of the safest procedures performed today. Radio frequency waves are placed in a circular pattern around the periphery of your cornea in your non-dominant eye. This steepens the cornea and allows the cornea to focus on near objects. Unlike monovision where you lose one line of distance vision for every line of reading vision gained, CK gives you blended vision – you gain three lines of close vision for every line of distance vision.

Presbyopia or the need for reading glasses after forty is progressive. With presbyopia, the natural lens of the eye hardens, reducing its ability to focus on near objects; however, people with presbyopia can see distance objects very well. Often the first sign of presbyopia is the need to reposition reading material to find the right focus point. CK does not stop the aging process, but turns back the hands of time and the beauty of CK is that it can be repeated as your eye ages.

How is it performed?

The procedure is performed as an outpatient in our surgery center. You may eat or drink as usual the day of surgery. A mild oral sedative is given immediately preceding the procedure. Antibiotic drops and numbing drops are placed in your eye. The procedure takes less than five minutes to perform. You will feel no pain. We do require that you have a driver take you home. We recommend that you go home and sleep or rest with both eyes closed for four hours. Many patients experience tearing, burning and foreign body sensation the day of the procedure which is much improved by the following day.

We conservatively create a treatment for you and twenty percent of the time we may do a two stepped process to avoid over treatment. It is rare to have an overcorrection, but if it occurs, it can be corrected with laser surgery. Infrequently, one of the spots may not be as effective as the others which can induce astigmatism. If it occurs we can place a second spot in that area to treat the astigmatism. To help avoid the very rare risk of infection, we treat you with antibiotic drops before and after the procedure and we recommend that you avoid dirty environments like hot tubs, swimming or gardening for one week.

After CK, a patient regains functional reading vision. You may comfortably read a cell phone, menu, dashboard, watch or price tags without reading glasses. If you wanted to sit down and read a book for several hours, you may feel more comfortable with reading glasses.

CK gives you the freedom from being dependent on reading glasses for everyday tasks. With CK you can enjoy visual freedom again.
